Il 6 luglio 1944, il Circo Ringling Bros. e Barnum & Bailey Circus si esibiva sotto una tenda gigante per un pubblico di circa 7000 spettatori, ad Hartford, CT. Ad un certo punto, durante lo spettacolo, si sviluppò un piccolo incendio iniziato nei pressi della toilette. Dato che la tela della tenda era coperta da una soluzione altamente infiammabile impermeabilizzante, bruciò tutto in meno di dieci minuti. Un totale di 168 persone sono morte. La causa dell’incendio non è mai stata determinata.
Nel 2002, il popolo di Hartford ha deciso di commemorare le vittime della tragedia sul posto dove è accaduto, che era un campo vuoto dietro a quella che ora è la Scuola Fred D. Wish in 350 Barbour St.. Sul posto dove sorgeva la grande tenda centrale hanno installato un grande monumento circolare che rappresenta i nomi di tutte le vittime e uno schema della tenda. Memorial to one of the most fatal fires in both circus and U.S. history
On July 6, 1944, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus were performing under a giant tent for an audience of approximately 7,000 in Hartford, CT. At some point during the performance, a small fire started near the restrooms. Because the tent canvas was covered in a highly flammable waterproofing solution, the whole tent burned down in under ten minutes. A total of 168 people died. The cause of the fire was never determined.
In 2002, the people of Hartford decided to memorialize the victims of the tragedy on the spot where it happened, which was an empty field behind what is now Fred D. Wish School at 350 Barbour St. Where the central tent post once stood, they installed a large circular monument that depicts the names of all the victims and a schematic of the tent. Trees were planted to outline the shape and size of the tent, and a series of stone markers inset with plaques illustrate the chronology of the event.
Six of the 168 victims were unable to be identified and were buried together at nearby Northwood Cemetery, although one has since been moved. A large horizontal stone slab inscribed with their story marks the grave plot.
