A Latina è tempo di bilanci.

Sono ormai spenti i riflettori sulla sedicesima edizione del “Festival Internazionale del Circo – Città di Latina”. Tuttavia, un vigoroso tam tam di entusiasmo è ancora vivace sui social e sulla stampa di settore: le foto del Festival “intasano” pagine e profili Facebook in tutto il mondo.

 L’edizione 2014 del Festival resterà nella memoria di tutti come l’edizione del trionfo del Turkmenistan con la splendida cavalleria del Presidente della Repubblica e dell’exploit del giovane russo Vasily Timchenko, del Rosgoscirk, con i suoi leoni marini. Una miscellanea di culture, tradizioni e discipline che ha finito con il confermare il ruolo di primo piano che gli animali occupano nello spettacolo circense: Vasily Timchenko ha incantato la totalità dei convenuti anche e soprattutto per aver mostrato chiaramente quanto sia amorevole e scambievole la relazione tra gli animali ed il loro addestratore. Una lezione alla quale, unici assenti, erano i soliti “detrattori” del Circo tradizionale impegnati altrove in manifestazioni assai poco frequentate rispetto alle rumorose attese degli organizzatori. È stato, tuttavia, anche l’anno dell’Italia: Christopher Togni (generoso anche in occasione della Santa Messa celebrata la Domenica nello Chapiteau), Eonys, Lord Nil, gli Sterza Musical Comedians, Marie Josee Farina, Yasmin Dell’Acqua sono i nomi degli artisti che hanno giocato in casa presentando i risultati dei loro sacrifici questo a dimostrazione del fatto che la scuola circense italiana, con il sostegno doveroso da parte di Enti ed Istituzioni preposte, può e deve perseverare nel proprio impegno teso all’educazione ed alla formazione dei giovani talenti. È stato poi l’anno più marcatamente interculturale: gli artisti in competizione erano provenienti da 21 Paesi diversi, e questo è il risultato di una fitta rete di relazioni internazionali consolidatasi negli anni anche e soprattutto grazie alla vicinanza espressa nei confronti del Festival da parte del Ministero degli Affari Esteri dello Stato Italiano.

Ed è stato anche l’anno del pubblico che, fin dal debutto del Giovedì, ha manifestato il proprio gradimento con numerose “standing ovation”: un buon “incipit” per il Festival ed, al tempo stesso, il segnale che il pubblico di Latina sta crescendo dal punto di vista qualitativo e partecipa in modo attivo e consapevole agli spettacoli se ne è avuta ulteriore dimostrazione anche in occasione della serata finale del Lunedì quando il pubblico è rimasto in sala fino all’ultimo istante di uno spettacolo durato oltre quattro ore e culminato con una lunga ma avvincente cerimonia di premiazione.

L’edizione numero 16 del “Festival Internazionale del Circo – Città di Latina” sarà ricordata anche per i tanti accadimenti ed eventi collaterali, in parte previsti ed in parte inattesi, che ne hanno impreziosito il calendario: oltre al “Circus Expo”, al “Caffè Letterario” ed alla “Messa Internazionale” si sono registrati due “fuori-programma” di rilievo: il gemellaggio tra la Città di Latina e la Città di Tourrette-Levens siglato dai rispettivi Sindaci nella Sala Consiliare del Comune di Latina, e la consegna di un’onorificenza per meriti culturali al Direttore Generale del Festival, Fabio Montico, da parte del governo dell’Ucraina. Tale secondo evento, occorso durante la cerimonia di premiazione inserita nello spettacolo finale del Lunedì, è stato una vera e propria sorpresa per Montico e per tutto lo staff del Festival: l’onorificenza attribuita dal governo ucraino vuole suggellare il significativo contributo dato da Fabio Montico nel promuovere e sostenere la cultura del Circo nel mondo.

Una manifestazione delle dimensioni e della caratura del “Festival Internazionale del Circo – Città di Latina” non sarebbe possibile senza il supporto che, a vario titolo ed in varia misura, Istituzioni, Enti, Artisti, Operatori di settore, collaboratori e volontari offrono di anno in anno con instancabile generosità. Su tutti il ringraziamento va al Ministero dei Beni e delle Attività Culturali e del Turismo, ed al Comune di Latina che, nonostante la grave situazione economica italiana, continuano a rinnovare il loro prezioso contributo un ringraziamento sentito va poi al Ministero degli Affari Esteri, al Consiglio Regionale del Lazio, alla Provincia di Latina, alla Federation Mondiale du Cirque, alla European Circus Association , all’Ente Nazionale Circhi, alla Chiesa Cattolica ed all’OPES per la loro vicinanza ed il loro patrocinio doveroso ringraziamento ai membri delle due Giurie Internazionali convenuti a Latina da ogni parte del mondo mettendo a disposizione degli artisti la loro professionalità e la loro straordinaria competenza su tutti il ringraziamento va ai due Presidenti di Giuria, il Sig. Istvan Kristof e la Sig.Ra Brigitta Boccoli. Un ringraziamento speciale va a ciascuno degli oltre 250 collaboratori che, al fianco della famiglia Montico, hanno reso possibile questa edizione del Festival mettendo in campo competenze ma, soprattutto, sentimenti di abnegazione e dedizione che hanno consentito loro di sostenere ritmi di lavoro serratissimi: ricordiamo qui gli operatori impegnati al botteghino, l’ufficio produzione, l’ufficio stampa, l’ufficio pass, l’ufficio eventi collaterali, la security, le hostess, gli steward, il bar, il catering, l’orchestra, i tecnici, i macchinisti, gli operai, i costruttori, i manutentori, gli operatori della sicurezza, medici, veterinari, osteopati e fisioterapisti, gli autisti, gli addetti alle certificazioni ed ai collaudi, i tirocinanti dell’Università “Sapienza” di Roma, i tanti collaboratori ed i volontari. Tra tutti i professionisti che, di anno in anno, mettono le proprie competenze al servizio del Festival spiccano senz’altro Tommy Cardarelli, alla Direzione di pista, ed Andrea Giachi, presentatore del Festival: Tommy ed Andrea hanno festeggiato quest’anno i loro dieci anni al Festival di Latina. Un particolare riconoscimento va a Rino Polverino: Rino, da imprenditore attento e generoso quale è, ha posto le basi affinchè lo storico locale di Latina “24milabaci” diventi la meta più ambita da tutto il mondo del Circo in quanto sede della serata di festeggiamenti nel cuore del Festival.

Da ultimo il ringraziamento più sentito va agli artisti: sono arrivati a Latina da 21 Paesi del mondo portando nella pista del Festival il loro carico di sacrifici, gioie e dolori, attese e speranze, entusiasmi e sconfitte essi hanno presentato al pubblico del Festival qualcosa di più di una attrazione circense hanno presentato al pubblico di Latina la loro stessa vita. Una vita che, al di là del trucco e dei lustrini, è fatta di insospettabili fatiche e di imperscrutabili desideri una vita tesa a regalare sorrisi a ciascuno di noi, parte di un pubblico che, dalla tribuna di un Circo, piccolo o grande, così come dal segreto del proprio cuore, non potrà che riservare a ciascun artista l’applauso più sincero.

Summing up the Festival.

The lights have gone out on the sixteenth edition of the ‘International Circus Festival – City of Latina’, but there is still plenty of enthusiasm visible on social media and in the dedicated press: photos of the Festival are all over Facebook on profiles and pages around the world. The 2014 edition of the Festival will be remembered for the joint victory of Troupe Galkynysh from Turkmenistan with the superb horses from the President of the Republic of Turkmenistan’s personal stables, and of young Russian performer Vasily Timchenko , from Rosgoscirk, with his amazing sea lions. The Festival was a huge mix of cultures, traditions and disciplines that concluded by confirming the important role of animal acts in the Circus: Vasily Timchenko enchanted entire audiences with the loving connection between trainer and animals that vividly shone through throughout his number. A lesson should be learnt from this by the absent ‘opponents’ of traditional Circus acts, present elsewhere in smaller demonstrations than were previously confidently announced by their organizers. This Festival was very much an ‘Italian’ event: Christopher Togni, Eonys, Lord Nil, the Sterza Musical Clowns, Marie Josee Farina, and Yasmin Dell’Acqua are all Italian performers, who demonstrated that the Italian circus schools, with the support of various associations and official bodies, can and must continue to persevere with the nurturing and training of young talent. This year’s Festival was also, however, memorable for its intercultural aspect: the performers present at the event came from 21 different nations, fruit of years of cultivating international relations and thanks also to the support of the Italian Foreign Ministry. It was also the year of the audiences who, starting right from the début show on Thursday, demonstrated their appreciation with numerous standing ovations. Apart from being a great and encouraging start for the performers, this shows that the local audiences are becoming more receptive and actively participative in the event. This became obvious again during the final Gala Show on Monday night when, after a show lasting around four hours, the public stayed to watch the lengthy but exuberant awards ceremony. The 16th edition of the ‘International Circus Festival – City of Latina’ will also be remembered for the many additional events, some planned, some not. As well as ‘Circus Expo’, ‘Literary Café’ and the ‘International Holy Mass’, there were two important extra events this year that enriched the Festival. In the first event, the city of Latina was officially twinned with the city of Tourrette-Levens in France during a formal ceremony in the town hall, where both Mayors signed a twinning oath in the presence of the Director of the Festival, circus dignitaries, and the International judges. The second event was a surprise, much-appreciated personal award given to Fabio Montico, Director of the ‘International Circus Festival – City of Latina’ by the Ukrainian Government during the awards ceremony on Monday evening. This award was given in official recognition of his ongoing and tireless worldwide efforts to promote and sustain the culture of the traditional circus. An event like the ‘International Circus Festival – City of Latina’ would not be possible without the support that is annually and generously offered by governmental bodies, associations, performers, production teams, and many voluntary workers and interns. Our thanks go to the Ministry for Culture Heritage and Activities and the Ministry of Tourism, and to the City Council of Latina who, despite the current difficult economic situation, continue to renew their contributions. Our warm thanks also to the Foreign Ministry, to the Lazio Regional Council, to the Province of Latina, to the Fédération Mondial du Cirque, to the European Circus Association, to the National Circus Association, to the Catholic Church, and to the sports association OPES for their support and patronage. Our deeply felt gratitude goes to the members of the two International Juries who came to Latina from all over the world, placing their professionalism, experience and competence at the disposal of the artists and the Festival a particular ‘thank you’ goes to the two Presidents of the juries, Mr. Istvan Kristof and Ms. Brigitta Boccoli. Special thanks go to the over 250 people who, alongside the Montico family, made this edition of the Festival possible with their professional skills, but above all with their dedicated team spirit and sheer hard work, in an event that demands long hours and grace and cordiality under almost continual pressure: these thanks go to the ticket office staff, the production team, the press office, the PASS office, the ‘additional events’ office, the security staff, the hostesses and stewards, the bar staff, the catering team, the band, the technical teams, the machinists, labourers, builders, maintenance and safety crews, doctors, veterinary surgeons, osteopaths and physiotherapists, the courtesy car drivers, those in charge of permits and checks, the interns from the ‘Sapienza’ University of Rome, and the many assistants and voluntary workers. Amongst all the professionals who, year after year, bring their professional experience and skills to the Festival, two names deserve a special mention: Tommy Cardarelli, Ringmaster and Director of Shows, and Andrea Giachi, who is the Presenter of the Festival: this year Tommy and Andrea both celebrated ten years of working with the Festival at Latina. A special ‘thank you’ also goes to Rino Polverino: Rino generously offered the use of his well-known and popular local nightclub, ‘24milabaci’ for a very memorable and enjoyable party on Sunday night for all the Circus people present at Latina during the course of the Festival. Finally, our very special thanks to the performers: they came to Latina from 21 different nations, sharing their experiences and sacrifices, joys and sadness, hopes and dreams, enthusiasm and defeat. They each brought more than a Circus number to the Festival they brought themselves, and their whole being. Their lives, beyond the make-up and sequins, are made up of unbelievable hard work and dedication, yet they impart happiness, wonder and excitement to each of us, young or old, who has the pleasure and the privilege of watching them perform whilst seated in a circus tent. We can only offer our sincere and heartfelt applause to each and every one of them. Goodbye for now, and we look forward to seeing you all at the seventeenth edition of the ‘International Circus Festival – City of Latina’, which will take place on October 15th
